A Walk Through the Origins of Alaró

Al Rum's committee devoted to promoting our culture among newcomers, is already preparing new tours starting from September. The planned tours in English include visits to the archaeological site 'Sa Bastida', a walk through the town center ending at the church, an overview of the town's industrialization, and the Alaró Castle. The possibility of offering activities in other languages is also being explored.

The programming follows the success of the first English-language tour. On Saturday, May 27th, over fifty English-speaking residents participated in a walk to learn about Alaró's origins. Al Rum organized this activity with the aim of helping foreign residents learn about the town they live in. The attendees had the privilege of being guided by Marga Coll, a recent cum laude Ph.D. in history.

The group assembled in Cabrit and Bassa Square. The first stop was at the Ses Misses cave, where they were told about the arrival of the first settlers in Mallorca and how the caves were used for both dwelling and burial. They also described the talaiot, the most prominent architectural feature of Mallorcan prehistory.

At the Ses Artigues spring, the importance of water as an essential element for any town was discussed. Using drawings, they demonstrated the 'canta' technique to extract water to the surface.

Around the irrigation ditch, a community of irrigators and millers was formed who coexisted and had conflicts over centuries. At the Jardí Fountain, a sketch was used to explain how a water mill works. After returning to the square, they provided a taste of the history of Cabrit and Bassa.

Participants, who asked numerous questions to Marga Coll, expressed their gratitude for this opportunity to learn more about Alaró, and some showed interest in associating themselves with Al Rum.
